Twenty insider tips

20 things you can enjoy when you are in Tyrol

  1. Walk to a mountain pasture (Alm) and try the dumplings in the mountain hut there (choose and prepare your walk accordingly, of course).
  2. Go to Achensee and take a boat trip on the lake or ride your bike around it.
  3. Ride up to Nordkette by cable car and enjoy the view of Innsbruck on one side and of the Karwendel mountains on the other.
  4. Find out which rock formation on the Nordkette is known as Frau Hitt and who Frau Hitt was.
  5. Try out (at least) one new sport.
  6. Visit the Stuibenfall, the highest waterfall in Tyrol with a drop of 159 metres.
  7. Find the peacocks in the park of Ambras Castle.
  8. Watch a film in the open-air cinema at the Zeughaus.
  9. Enjoy a day spa or time out with overnight stay(s) in one of the great wellness hotels in Tyrol.
  10. Go cycling or hiking (not too far) after work to enjoy this Tyrolean way of life.
  11. Swim in a mountain lake (for a few seconds; 5 degrees is too cold for a real swim!).
  12. Try “Firngleiten” or “Figln” (skiing on ultra-short skis) in spring (if you can do it without hurting yourself).
  13. Go to Möserer See near Seefeld and swim in the warm water.
  14. Walk through Innsbruck (e.g. through the district of Saggen) on one of the first really warm days of the year and look for the first snowdrops in the gardens.
  15. Enjoy a “Kiachl” (deep-fried dough with a topping) at a Tyrolean Christmas market.
  16. Visit Swarovski Crystal Worlds in Wattens.
  17. Walk across the Highline 179 suspension bridge in Reutte and see if you are free from giddiness.
  18. Visit the Silver Mine in Schwaz and enjoy the medieval atmosphere.
  19. Enjoy a punch at the Christkindlmarkt (Christmas market) in Innsbruck while listening to the Amraser Turmbläser, who will be playing Christmas sounds from high up on the Goldenes Dachl.
  20. Visit the Museum of Tyrolean Farms (Museum Tiroler Bauernhöfe) in Kramsach.
